VA to Increase Veterans Benefits by 1.5%

The Department of Veterans Affairs has announced that disabled veterans with a disability rating 10% or higher will receive a 1.5% cost of living increase in their disability compensation checks starting with their January 1, 2014, disability payment.

When he announced the COLA increase, VA Secretary Eric Shinseki said, "We're pleased there will be another cost-of-living increase for veterans, their families and their survivors, The increase expresses in a tangible way our nation's gratitude for the sacrifices made by our service-disabled and wartime veterans."

The 1.5% increase matches the cost of living adjustment that the federal government announced in late October for military retirees, federal civilian retirees, and Social Security recipients.

For veterans struggling to get by on their VA disability checks, a 1.5% cost of living increase isn’t much, but it’s better than nothing.

For a veteran with a 30% to 60% disability rating:

  • That’s a $12.15 increase each month if the veteran is single, from $810.00 a month to $822.15 a month.
  • If the veteran is married, that’s a $13.33 increase each month, from $888.50 a month to $901.83 a month.
  • If the married veteran has one child, it’s a $14.19 increase each month, from $946.00 a month to $960.19 a month.

For a veteran with a 70% to 100% disability rating:

  • That’s a $14.19 increase each month if the veteran is single, from $946.00 a month to $960.19 a month.
  • If the veteran is married, that’s a $27.45 increase each month, from $1,830.31 a month to $1,857.76 a month.
  • If the married veteran has one child, it’s a $29.01 increase each month, from $1,933.80 a month to $1,962.81 a month.

Think about it. Could you live on that income?
