VA Medical Center invites community to week long open house to salute veterans

The Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center, 5500 E. Kellogg, invites the public to participate in Open House activities February 6-10, honoring patients and residents, during the VA's 2012 National Salute to Veteran Patients Program.

"VA’s National Salute to Veteran Patients gives our community a chance to let those who have given so much to our nation know that they are not forgotten," said Dole VA Medical Center Director Tom Sanders. "We've invited local celebrities, elected officials, and other groups to visit during the week. We want people of all ages to share Valentine's Day cheer with our patients.”

Sanders said he hopes visitors will also learn more about the important roles that volunteers play at the medical center throughout the year and hopes that some of the coming week's visitors will pursue volunteer opportunities at the medical center.

"Our medical center’s 250 volunteers are an important part of our health care team and the National Salute Program is a great way for people to learn more about helping the veterans we serve here at the medical center," Sanders said. “Visitors are often surprised at how varied our volunteer opportunities are.”

Citizens, young and old, are invited to send Valentine’s Day cards and letters to Dole VA Medical Center, simply addressed “Dear Veteran.” Sanders said the Valentines are distributed by volunteers to patients throughout the hospital. National Salute Week festivities will also feature these local Wichita bands in public concerts at the Medical Center’s Building 4 Auditorium, near the Transitional Living Center, at 7 p.m. each night. Scheduled to appear are:

Monday, February 6--The Upbeats - blues, jazz, Motown and dance favorites.
Wednesday, February 8--Jimmy Legg Band - 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s Classic Rock
Thursday, February 9--The 3/4-Time Band - bluegrass, folk and old country
Friday, February 10--Sirens of South Central - acoustic country, pop and rock

Individuals or groups wishing to participate in the VA Medical Center visitation programs, honoring National Salute to Hospitalized Veterans, or for more information on how you can help, please call Dole VA Medical Center’s Voluntary Service office, 316-685-2221, ext. 53222.
