New York Times bestselling author of Flowers in the Attic and Petals on the Wind, has released the first book of a two part series. The Heavenstone Secret’s is a very typical V.C. Andrews classic, now modern, gothic novel.
The Heavenstone sisters live with their parents in a mansion in the heart of bluegrass country, Kentucky.
The younger and prettier sister, Sementha, is afraid of just about everything, particularly her older sister, Cassie. Cassie controls her younger sister’s every move. She tells her how to dress, how to act, and who to like.
Cassie takes the game to another level after tragedy strikes the family. She begins wearing their mother’s clothing and is affectionately inappropriate with their father.
Sementha feels completely trapped and unable to escape the mess that they call home.
Cassie stopped by to say good night. For a moment, when I saw her in the doorway, I thought I was looking at our mother. When she came in, I realized why. My sister was wearing one of Mother's nightgowns. I recognized it immediately.
And she spoke in Mother's soft, loving tone of voice.
"How are you, Semantha?"
"All right," I said, puzzled and even a bit frightened by this sudden change in her.
She came to my bedside and sat, just the way Mother always did. Then she brushed back my hair, and she smiled a Mother smile, loving, concerned.
"You've had a terrible, terrible day. Just remember, you're always safe here and always loved here and always part of this great family. We might not approve of everything each of us does, but we'll never betray or desert each other, never."
She leaned down and kissed me on the cheek. Then she brought her lips to my ear and whispered, "We're the Heavenstones."
Secret Whispers, the second book in the series, is due out in February. This novel picks up when Sementha is graduating from private school. With her return to her Kentucky home, she is haunted from the grave, by her older sister and mother. Cassie is more terrifying dead than when she was alive.
Sementha’s father remarries and she is hopeful again. The past grips her causing her to be unable to move forward.
