The campus of University of Virginia's College at Wise, located in far southwest Virginia, is on lockdown as of late evening on Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2013. It is not confirmed at this time what the reasoning is for the lockdown, but reports from locals say that a gunman is currently on campus.

UPDATE: The lockdown at UVA-Wise has been lifted. A student admitted to calling 911, was interviewed by police, and now reveals that the entire thing was a hoax.

School officials have confirmed the campus is on lockdown, but WDBJ7.com says that is the only confirmation given at this time. Locals have been reporting on Facebook stating that people on campus believe there to be a gunman wandering about.
Virginia State Police troopers have been called to assist the Wise County Sheriff's Office with whatever the situation may actually be. CBS affiliate WJHL in Tri-Cities has confirmed that information.
WDBJ does say that parents of children who attend UVA Wise, that their kids are being told by school officials and authorities to stay inside.
Police are taking no chances with any situations such as this, especially after what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut back in December.
Wise, Virginia's motto is "The Safest Place on Earth," and right now, we hope that to be correct and that the unconfirmed reports bring no trouble.
