The clarion call for clean energy reached a spectacular high yesterday when students from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia took participated in a country-wide effort to promote clean energy.
Students at the University of Virginia gathered on the front lawn of Alderman and Peabody Halls while in Blacksburg, Virginia Teach students held a rally at the Graduate Life Center Lawn.
Paper pinwheels were signed by students and supporters that visually demonstrated the cleaner energy choices that we have as Americans.
The pinwheels will be shipped to the Department of Energy to influence their outlook on America’s energy future.
These rallies were part of the Sierra Club’s Beyond Coal Campaign, a campaign which calls for the reduction of America’s dependence on coal.
The struggle to move beyond coal is not one of logic, but one of embedded interests. Our decision makers in Virginia have to hear, loud and clear, that the people of Virginia want a clean energy future.
A significant step was taken yesterday by the students of Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. But lest there be any illusions, many in the coal industry will wait and are waiting for the anti-coal tide to wear down.
As Virginians who care about our state and our country, let’s do the coal industry the disservice of not granting them their wish.
