Utah Utes football: Safety Keith McGill shines at NFL Combine

Though the Utah Utes had a season most fans would like to forget, the good news is that several former Utes players are grading well at the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis -- most surprising of which was safety Keith McGill.

Keith McGill, Safety

Few expected McGill (pictured) to do anything better than Trevor Reilly at the Combine -- but he has proven his detractors wrong with outstanding performances in several areas on Tuesday, February 26.

First, his 4.4 40-yard dash time was one of the best among all incoming NFL prospects. His vertical jump of 39.0 inches was the best among players at his position.

And his 129.0 inch broad jump was also the best among safeties, wowing scouts and onlookers -- this from a player who only played in five games for the Utes last season due to injury.

The word from NFL scouts is that he is receiving favorable reviews from the Seattle Seahawks -- but time will tell.

Trevor Reilly, Linebacker

Reilly came into the Combine with more questions than answers. But on Monday, February 25 he provided more answers as he put together a solid first day with 26 reps on the bench press.

Though he will probably continue to field more questions from pro teams about his advanced age for a rookie (26 years old) and recent knee surgery from which he’s still recovering -- most NFL teams are looking at Reilly as a situational rusher.

Tenny Palepoi, Defensive Tackle

Palepoi graded lower than the other two former Utes -- but a 5.3 rating overall at the Combine on Monday, February 25 is still a solid score for him.

Palepoi did nothing extraordinary; he was simply average in all areas. Most scouts project him to be a situational player, much like his former teammate Trevor Reilly.
