Utah State football: Center Tyler Larsen impresses at NFL Scouting Combine

Is yet another Utah State Aggies football player headed to the World Champion Seattle Seahawks? Center Tyler Larsen might have a shot -- after clearing 36 reps in the Bench Press at the NFL Combine this week.

Tyler Larsen, Center

Larsen was a beast at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis this week. His Bench Press output tied him for second among all participants in the three-day event.

His 36 reps was certainly the most of any Utah college athlete and budding NFL draft prospect.

His 5.2 overall score was emblematic of the work the Aggies have done to put their program on the same level as Utah and BYU, for Larsen outscored every Cougar except for Kyle Van Noy.

The downside: scouts don’t see Larsen as anything but a technician at the next level -- a skill that Pete Carroll hones to perfection in Seattle and has for years. So for most it’s probably a wash.

Mo Alexander, Safety

Alexander came into the Combine with several questions about his speed, footwork -- and the fact that he is a converted linebacker probably didn’t help him either.

That said, he did alright, earning a 4.9 grade overall from NFL scouts. Like Keith McGill of Utah, Alexander did very well in the Vertical Jump, maxing out at 38 inches total -- ranking him among the top performers at his position.

And like McGill, Alexander also ranked highly in the Broad Jump at 123 inches overall. Scouts seem to have him pegged as a reserve safety -- but Mo wouldn’t be the first Aggie to shock the world by surprising everyone.

Nevin Lawson, Cornerback

Lawson underwhelmed in Indy, scoring a 4.80 overall as NFL scouts continue to pick -- as local media continues to pick -- at the many flaws Lawson has in his game.

That he can’t play consistent football has been something plaguing him his entire college career - but the upside to Lawson is huge.

His 4.48 40-yard dash time was among the best at his position --and underlines the raw speed and talent he possesses. He looks like a mid-round pick -- but with his question marks could drop to the lower rounds. Pro Day will be huge for him.
