Utah sells your personal identifying information. Who is buying it?

The state of Utah’s Lt. Governor’s office sells the complete voter registration list for $1,050. The list contains each and every registered voter’s name, address, telephone number and full birth date (month, day, year).

During the past two years, the Lt. Governor’s office sold the list 44 times to over 30 separate entities. Those purchasing the list included private individuals, political action groups, marketing firms, political campaign consultants and Utah’s two major political parties.

The list can be used by purchasers for any purpose and there is no provision for safeguarding the personal identifying information on the lists. The lists, with millions of voters’ personal identifying information, can be copied, distributed to campaign workers, posted to the internet and/or thrown in the trash.

The Republican and Democrat parties, Utah’s media organizations and data mining companies insist that all of this information must remain public and they have killed all attempts to protect it.

The Republican and Democrat parties demand that all voters – unaffiliated, Libertarian Party, Constitution Party, etc. - make their personal identifying information available to them to use as they see fit as a precondition of voting. Citizens who refuse to make their personal identifying information available are denied the right to vote.
