What’s going on this weekend (September 20 – 22, 2013)? The greater Salt Lake area’s horse fans will be happy to hear that the show and event season hasn’t quite come to a close.
As we canter into the fall season and welcome slightly cooler temperatures, we still get to enjoy a fun variety of horse-related events.
The Utah Barrel Racing Association will hold its big year-end race up in Heber this weekend. Their fast and exciting races (5D open and 3D youth) begin on Friday evening, September 20 with a slot race. The start time is 9 a.m. both Saturday and Sunday. For a fun show that offers affordable entry fees and comfortable, casual attire, head west to Grantsville’s Pegasus event center. Their Western play day takes place this Saturday, September 21st. These inviting and affordable shows are SO much fun! The entry fee is just $5 per class for most events (a few, such as the ‘egg and spoon’ are even free!) and there is a grounds fee of just $5 for those who do not board on-site. Even if you’re new to showing, you’ll feel welcome and right at home. It’s a terrific way to introduce your horse, youngsters, or beginning riders of any age to the show pen. Registration opens at 9:00 a.m. Warm up at 9:30. Classes begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. and are divided by age group. Visit the Pegasus website or check out their Facebook page to learn more.
If horse jumping interests you, Rose Ranch Riding Stable is hosting the jump start schooling show on Saturday as well, from 9:00 a.m. until noon. Located in South Jordan (11162 Redwood Road) this active facility is easy to find and offers plenty of parking for spectators or competitors. Footing is excellent in both the outdoor ring as well as their spacious indoor arena. Featuring lead line, walk-only and assorted walk-trot classes, this special event is ideal for beginning riders. And we all know how much horse-lovers appreciate their canine friends. The annual Strut Your Mutt walk takes place at Liberty Park this Saturday morning, September 21st. The walk begins promptly at 10:00 a.m. While registration closes tomorrow (Friday, 9/20/2013) late entries can still participate (adding a fee of $5 to the usual $30 registration cost). Those who’ve pre-registered can pick up their t-shirt and gift bag tomorrow between the hours of 5:00 and 8:00 p.m. at Liberty Park.
