A couple from Draper, Utah thought that putting razor blades in doughnuts they bought from a grocery store and then eating them, would help them get some money out of the store by suing them.
The problem with that idea was that it did not make sense and they were caught and arrested.
Carol Lee Leazer-Hardman, 39, and Michael Condor, 35, were arrested after they filed a police report saying that they purchased a box of doughnuts from Smith's Food and Drug store, and after eating them found out there were pieces of razor blades in them.
The store removed all of the boxes of doughnuts from the shelves while the case was being investigated as a precaution, even though the doughnuts were in sealed tamper resistant boxes they were packaged in when they were shipped from the company the grocery store orders them from.
Smith's does not make the doughnuts on site.
A spokesperson for Smith's said;
“Those doughnuts were actually manufactured out of state and sent to that store in sealed, tamper-proof packaging,”
Draper Police Sgt. Chad Carpenter said "things did not add up" after police started investigating the pair and that is when they found out that they had purposely eaten the doughnuts that they had placed fingernail length pieces of razor blades in.
The pair worked at a nearby Dollar Tree store and also gave one of their co-workers doughnuts with the blades as well.
They will be charged with aggravated assault for that along with the other charges they are facing of filing a false police report among other charges.
Condor admitted to police that they had put the blades in the doughnuts in the hopes of getting a settlement from the store. They were in debt and needed money.
The pair had x-rays taken at the hospital that showed the blades in their stomachs.
Their co-worker who ate the doughnut with the blade in it reported them to the police and she suffered cuts to her mouth.
It was not reported if the couple had injuries of their own from consuming the razor blades.
