Veterans Day, also known as Armistice Day has been a US holiday since 1918 and began to honor veterans at the end of World War I. Legislation passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day,'" according to Military.com.
To honor Utah veterans on Veterans Day, many events are scheduled around the state on November 11, 2009 to say thank you for their years of service to this country.
The University of Utah plans events that begin with a panel discussion, full military dress ceremony, reception and vintage car show. For more information and times of events, click here.
The annual Veterans Day parade begins at city hall at 11 am in West Jordan.
Peter Corroon, Salt Lake County Mayor will give a speech in honor or veterans at 11:15 am.
In the rotunda at the State Capital, The Salt Lake Men's Choir will perform and speakers will call for gay and lesbian veterans to come out of the closet to show their opposition to the military's "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy.
The Utah National Guard will hold a concert at the University of Utah's Jon Huntsman Center at 7 pm.
