Utah basketball: Utes coach Larry Krystkowiak agrees to five-year extension

After Utah Utes basketball coach Larry Krystkowiak received interest from the Cal Bears and Marquette about their head coaching vacancies, the University of Utah knew time was of the essence on its end for Krystkowiak to agree to a longer, more lucrative deal.

On Thursday, April 3, Utah athletics director Dr. Chris Hill confirmed to multiple media sources that Krystkowiak has agreed to a five-year extension with the school.

Terms of the extension were not immediately disclosed -- but it is believed the two parties had been working on it for a few weeks, according to The Salt Lake Tribune.

Utah athletic director Dr. Chris Hill told the Deseret News that he believes the deal to be a “new five-year contract” -- which might in its writing preclude Krystkowiak from pursuing any other coaching jobs for the next five years.

Though the agreement has yet to be put into writing -- and will be a matter of public disclosure once it is, the Deseret News added -- it is a big step for Utah basketball in general as this Coach K has done what Jim Boylen and Ray Giacoletti before him could not.

Krystkowiak has not only resurrected the Utah program in terms of basketball by lifting it to over 20 wins and an NIT appearance this year, he also had five players named to the Pac-12 All-Academic team.

In his three years at the school, the Utes have seen considerable improvement on the court, going from six wins his first year to a 15-18 record his second -- to 21 wins in 2013-14.

Krystkowiak’s career coaching record at Utah is 42-55 overall in three years at the school.
