Longhorns finish 3rd at golf championships
The long regular season came to an end as both the men's and women's Texas Longhorns golf teams finished third over the weekend at the Big 12 Championships.
Longhorn Women's Golf
The Texas Longhorns women's team has been ranked in the top 50 for most of the year and has had some shining moments throughout the "up and down" '09-'10 golf season. They wrapped things up on Sunday finishing third in the Big 12 Championship at the Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club in Norman, Oklahoma. The lady Longhorns have fared well in this tournament in years past, notching a sixth place finish last year and another third place finish in 2008. Shannon Fish led the way carding a 9-over which placed her in a tie for 11th place overall. Fish, a senior, was the team's most improved player in '08-'09. Even though she did not play a full schedule this year, based on the 7 tournaments she did play in, she led the team in scoring average with a 74.36. The Longhorns team is young which features (3) freshman and (1) sophomore in their regular starting five. If they can continue to improve over the next couple of years, this team definitely will be a force to reckon with in the Big 12.
Texas was given an at-large bid into the NCAA West Regional Championship as a number ten seed on Monday. Regional play begins May 6th at the Stanford Golf Course in Palo Alto, CA. This region is loaded with top teams including #1 ranked UCLA and #3 ranked Arizona.

Longhorn Men's Golf
The Longhorn men's team had an identical finish to their season as their female counterparts by nabbing third place at the Men's Big 12 Championship at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, TX. The Longhorns had high hopes for this tournament and played well, but Oklahoma State ran away again with their third straight Big 12 title. Bobby Hudson and Dylan Frittelli both notched top-10 finishes. Hudson had a remarkable opening round 64 and played steady the remaining three rounds to finish at 6-under which was good enough for a tie for third place. Frittelli shot even par for the tournament and finished in a tie for seventh place. The Longhorns, currently ranked 7th, have had a great season and were even ranked as high as 5th at one point on Golfweek's Collegiate Rankings. The men's Regional NCAA Championship fields will be announced on May 10th with play starting on May 20th. The Longhorns will definitely make the field and will be in contention to make it to the NCAA Championships in Tennessee in June.
