USO Las Vegas in conjunction with Smith’s Food & Drug Stores will be collecting messages for the troops on Saturday, June 30th, at several Smith’s stores throughout the Vegas valley. USO Las Vegas volunteers will be encouraging Smith’s customers to send messages of support to the men and women serving around the world in the U.S. military.

According to Marianne Wojciechowicz, the USO Las Vegas Programs Manager, the specially designed and signed cards will be given to service members who pass through the USO Las Vegas Center at McCarran International Airport.

According to the press release distributed by USO Las Vegas, volunteers will also be asking Smith’s customers for monetary donations and will provide a wish list of trial sized toiletry items that the troops frequently use and need. Customers are being encouraged to purchase these products, along with appropriate snack items, while shopping at Smith’s so that the volunteers can then take the donated items back to the USO Las Vegas Center for distribution.

The press release quoted Marsha Gilford, Smith’s Vice President of Public Affairs, stating, “We have a tremendous respect for the USO and the comfort its volunteers provide for our service men and women and their families.” Gilford continued, “In addition to this in-store event, any change contributed to the plastic boxes found at our check stands from June 17th to July 14th will be part of the $2 million committed by the Kroger Co. in 2012 to support USO programs throughout the world.”

Volunteers will be at the participating Smith’s locations from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. With Independence Day just a few days away, USO Las Vegas volunteers will encourage customers to express their thoughts and feelings on freedom in the thank you cards, and to thank our troops for their service.

According to Doug Bradford, the USO Las Vegas Center Director, “There are some 2.4 million men and women serving in the military. Every day they protect our freedoms and our way of life.” He shared that between 80 and 100 service members pass through the center at McCarran airport every day, expressing, “I really hope we’ll get thousands of the Smiths cards to pass on to our troops and to show our troops how much Las Vegas appreciates the sacrifices they, and their families, make on our behalf. ”

The following Smith’s Food & Drug locations will be participating:

Smith’s 10616 S. Eastern Avenue
