Using potty time to teach ABC's

Teaching our toddlers and pre-school (before any schooling occurs) kids is pretty difficult.  A 2 year old has an attention span of only 30 - 60 seconds on 1 activity alone!  Every half year and year, their attention span will increase, although it will take time for a child to work alone, play alone, or even socialize alone.

With this in mind, it's hard for any parent to try to teach their children their ABC's, 123's, or anything else.  Here is a tip that I know works.

1.)  Get your child ready and prepared for the potty.  (However long this will take, take your time!)

2.) Go to Michael's, you know, the local craft store and look for this dry erase pull and stick sort of paper.  It's white.  You cut it to fit the size you need and the back is already sticky.  You can stick it to the wall, the fridge, anything.

3.)  Buy dry erase markers, an eraser, and the dry erase spray that properely cleans the board.

4.) Allow your child to "explore" the markers and the dry erase board:  allow your child to write on the board and have them help you erase their "art."

5.)  Now you are ready to teach them their ABC's.  Start out with one or two letters at a time.  Then, you can gradually increase the number of letters.

~You read the letter.  Have them watch your mouth while you are saying the word and the sound.

~Have them repeat what you said.

6.)  You can also do their names, numbers, etc... on the white board.  Become creative on how you teach them!  Remember, kids learn when they have fun!

You'll be amazed at how fast they will learn  (Give them time to learn too!  It takes a while to absorb new information). They won't even realize that they are even pottying too!  (Don't forget to prasie them on going potty too!  A few stickers or a piece of candy will do just fine.)
