Using hypnosis for pain management

The use of hypnosis as an anesthesia goes back as far as 5000 years ago when Egyptians and Indians used it to treat their people. In 1821, Racamier used hypnosis to perform painless dental operations. Throughout the years, hypnosis has been used by many other doctors and dentists to perform surgeries and tooth extractions. In 1952, dentists in Britain formed the British Association of Dental Hypnosis.

Hypnosis is used in junction with the doctors prescribed treatment.  The advantages of hypnosis are to help lower the threshold of pain, to help with patient compliance in carrying out the doctor’s instructions.

There is good pain and bad pain. Good pain is your body telling you something is wrong and you need to visit the doctor. You must honor this pain. Bad pain serves no purpose. It is idiopathic which means there is absolutely no reason for the pain. The doctor’s cannot find a reason for the pain.

Chronic pain is ongoing pain, a constant in your life. This can lead to depression issues. Depression is the act of the body to push down anxiety. Depression is suppressed anxiety. Anxiety depressive disorder is the fear of losing control. With chronic pain you have accepted this is how your life is going to be. Chronic pain can cause damage to the brain overtime. When we are experiencing chronic discomfort, we can become very childlike.  We are not in control of what is going on with our bodies.

With the use of hypnosis, you are given the tools to empower yourself to take control of your discomfort. When you are empowered, you become an adult again, you are able to take responsibility for yourself, your treatment, and following through with your doctor’s prescribed treatment. Hypnosis is not a cure, but is a major adjunct in helping you find relief.

Acute pain will subside at some point. It is caused by accidents and emergencies.

For example, you’ve been diagnosed with a disease; your anxiety level rises to an all-time high. The use of hypnosis is to decrease the overall anxiety which will help to alleviate pain. Pain is a perception. We don’t feel pain.  Anxiety is an emotion that creates pain. Anxiety is at the core of all illnesses.

Have you been diagnosed with an illness and you have to have treatments that make you ill? Do you have a problem swallowing the pills that you’ve been given? Or do you have to have surgery and you’re terrified? Hypnosis can help to alleviate these symptoms, to make the treatments more bearable. It can help to alleviate the fear and raise the confidence that you have in your doctor, so that you can be more relaxed before, and after the procedure. Being relaxed aids in your healing process.

Another good time to use hypnosis is when you are attending physical therapy. Doing the exercises in PT can be painful. You hurt when you are finished, you know you need to do the exercises at home between visits to your therapist, but you also know it’s going to hurt. So why do them?  Hypnosis can help you manage the pain after a session, but will also aid in your continuing your exercises, so that you can become well.

If you are finding yourself in any of these predicaments, or just want to experience the relaxed sensation of hypnosis, give hypnosis a try.
