Crave the chance to attend your favourite Mahalia Jackson/Saenger Theatre events without killing the bank? Becoming a volunteer usher allows you that opportunity, and it's completely flexible to your schedule. The two main requirements are: must be 18 or older, and attending Usher University--an orientation for new volunteers, which has several upcoming sessions this week and early next week.
The sessions are divided into two groups:
Firstly, the main Usher University session is roughly a three-hour orientation. It covers policies, emergency procedures, and a tour of the Saenger, comprehension of seating and lobby areas, etc. Plus, you'll get to meet some of the other volunteers you might be working with.
The second session is for MJT volunteer veterans. If you've ushered in the past season at the Mahalia Jackson, you're welcomed to attend one of the shorter sessions, which is geared toward acquainting experienced ushers with the reconstructed Saenger Theatre. With the grand re-opening a few short weeks away, orientation will provide you with a first look at the renovations and help prepare you for the Broadway shows moving over from the MJT.
Anyone wishing to usher at the Saenger must attend one session of Usher University. Veterans who only want to usher at the MJT are not required to attend. However, keep in mind that all Broadway events are now being hosted at the Saenger, and to qualify for those shows, ushers must be equipped with the Saenger's policies and procedures.
