The 40th annual American Music Awards took place on Nov. 18, 2012, at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Here is what this American Music Awards star said backstage in the American Music Awards press room.
Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist
This is the 40th American Music Awards show. What do you think about the show lasting for all these years?
Anything that has lasted this long, a legacy. [American Music Awards executive producer] Dick Clark is so rich with culture and being able to recognize talent for so many years and have an incredible legacy. I’m just really happy to be a part of it and still take an award home.
Why is it important for you to discover new artists?
To be an artist that has been able to evolve and transcend culture, it’s from the book of Dick Clark. The fact that throughout generations, he’s been able to recognize incredible talent through different genres, and then put together such incredible performances and recognize it. And also too the fact that the fans are part of the voting process, that makes it gratifying for them but also great of him to recognize the talent and effort that goes into what we present as artists.
What do you have to say about World AIDS Day?
Condoms do work. And I don’t mean that in a light way. I don’t really have much to say about it.
What song could you not stop listening to this year?
“Climax.” It seemed like they played it everywhere I went. And I had to sing it.
You’re a mentor to Justin Bieber. What’s your secret to longevity and what advice would you give him and other young artists?
The proof is in the pudding. The longer you do it, the more of an example you can set. And being able to be that to him, being a mentor and just being an artist that continues to evolve and find my way, find my voice for my audience, that is the example that I think he’s following. This is an early start for him. He has had incredible years, and we’re just going to continue to push him to be his best self.
