Use holiday sights and sounds to motivate movement for children

See also

The multitude of holiday sights and sounds can be used as a springboard for a wonderful creative movement project. Have the children explore and express through creative movement the following ideas: holiday lights that glow, twinkle, shine or flash; bells that swing or shake and ring; a sleigh that rocks, glides and flies; reindeer that prance, gallop and dance; holiday shoppers hurrying and scurrying, dodging and darting with stacks of packages, etc.

A moving musical mural can be created by each child choosing his/her favorite holiday movement from the movement exploration session. Select several pieces of holiday music that have various tempos and interesting rhythmic patterns. Set your "Holiday Scene" by having each child take his/her place and hold/freeze a beginning pose. Start the music and watch as the moving musical mural comes to life. Change the music and see the picture change.
