American Heart Month this February is a good time to think about a proper diet as a major factor in maintaining your heart health. This article will consider reasons why many diets fail, and how dieters can avoid these failures.
Some dieters shop when they are hungry, and, in doing so, they buy and bring home junk food. Yes, it tastes good to consume the fat, sugar, and salt in junk foods. Comedian Rodney Dangerfield said, I'm at the age where food has taken the place of sex. In fact, I just had a mirror put over my kitchen table. If weight and waistlines are to be controlled, however, eating must become a more minor pleasure in middle and old age.
Other people fall away from their diets when, on a regular basis, they go on drinking binges at happy hours after work. Comedian Phyllis Diller said, Health-that’s what my friends are always drinking to before they fall down. Alcohol has empty calories and plenty of them.
Still other people go off their diets during special celebrations. Erma Bombeck said, No One Diets on Thanksgiving. What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets. I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving? Diet cheaters reason that they can go off their diet for such an occasion. Unfortunately, there also are Christmas parties, New Year’s celebrations, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, and Labor Day holiday celebrations to tempt dieters. In addition, there are birthday parties, weddings, and vacations that can give dieters additional excuses to cheat on their diets.
It doesn’t take a celebration to tempt reluctant dieters, who can invent desperate excuses for their poor food choices. The short range hedonism of tasty junk food overpowers the long range hedonism of their diet. Newspaper column writer Doug Larson said, Life expectancy would grow by leaps and bounds if green vegetables smelled as good as bacon.”
Even nutritious food can be bad for a diet. American film actor Orson Welles said, My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four; unless there are three other people.
Those who find it difficult to stay on a diet might want to consider making friends in an organization such as Weightwatchers. Just remember the Beatles singing, I get by with a little help from my friends.
If you can’t successfully manage to diet for your own benefit, try to stay healthy for the benefit of your family and friends.
