The University of South Carolina Beaufort (USCB) won both games of a double header Saturday on the first day of action for the school’s newest athletic team. Freshman Kristy Cook pitched a five-inning no-hitter in the first game and sophomore Rebekah Herty hit a grand slam in the second game to outscore Wesleyan College 16-0 and 21-1 at Richard Gray Sports Complex.
“Let’s face it, nobody knew what was going to happen yesterday,” head coach and athletics director Ty Rietkovich said in a press release. “Today it looks like it was a nice, easy day at the park, but a lot of that had to do with how prepared we were.”
Thirteen different players had hits for USCB in the doubleheader, and the Sand Sharks made only one error. The athletic teams are based at USCB’s Hilton Head Gateway campus.
“It kind of felt like parachuting for the first time – you’ve covered everything, and you just have to pray you’ve got it all right,” Rietkovich observed. “We did. Now we’ve got to try to do it again. I think the biggest challenge for us is the next game, because we’ve prepared so much and thought so much about this day.
“We’ve set the bar extremely high for day one, and now we have to make sure we can duplicate it next weekend.”

It was a busy Saturday for the USCB athletic teams. USCB runners Selena Hutson and Katie Mock ensured they will get a chance to repeat their top-30 finishes in the marathon at this year’s NAIA Track and Field National Championships in late May, as both achieved “A” standard qualifying times in the Hilton Head Half Marathon on Saturday morning. The Sand Shark baseball team swept a doubleheader from visiting Milligan (Tenn.), winning 9-6 and 6-2 at Richard Gray Sports Complex Saturday night.
