A day after opening their Brazilian exhibition road trip with a victory, the USC Trojans fell short in a game against the Sau Paulo-based Sao Jose dos Campos team.
Coming off of an exhibition-opening 60-51 victory over Pindamonhangaba in an exhibition-opening 60-51 victory over Pindamonhangaba, Jio Fontan once again led the way for the Trojans, scoring 28 points for USC, twenty of which came in the second half.
Fontan's backcourt partner, sophomore Maurice Jones, also played a strong game with 20 points, five rebounds and four steals on the day.
However, despite a strong run in the second period of the scrimmage, the Trojans were unable weather a poor first half performance and ultimately fell short to Sao Jose dos Campos, 87-81.
"We didn't do our job in the first half," said USC head basketball coach Kevin O'Neill. "Jio (Fontan) and Mo (Jones) both played great today. Everybody played well in the second half and I'm proud of their effort. This was a really good team we played today."
The Sao Paulo game was originally slated to be a scrimmage, which would have allowed Alexis Moore, Byron Wesley and Greg Allen an opportunity to play. The trio is waiting for their summer grades to be cleared.
Moore, Wesley and Allen, who accompanied the rest of the team to Brazil, will likely have to wait at least another day or two before grades are posted and they are allowed to participate in the exhibitions.
