USC's Kiffin fails in attempt to steal Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti

With Chip Kelly officially no longer a part of Oregon football, USC reached out to longtime Oregon defensive coordinator Nick Aliotti on Thursday in an attempt to persuade him to join the Trojans' staff. According to reports, Aliotti showed no interest and immediately declined.

Aliotti has been on the Oregon coaching staff for 21 seasons, spread over three different stints. At 58 years old, Aliotti intends to remain with the Ducks for the foreseen future, according to a source close to The Oregonian's Adam Jude.

The Oregon Ducks were the only program in the FBS to have kept its entire coaching staff intact over the past four seasons. The departure of Kelly ends that run, but Aliotti isn't going anywhere.

The Ducks have started their search for the new head coach, although all signs within the program point to current offensive coordinator Mark Helfrich getting the nod. Aliotti has not said whether or not he has any interest in interviewing for the Ducks head coaching vacancy.

Known as having very close relationships with his defensive players, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Aliotti turned down a potential job with USC. Trojans head coach Lane Kiffin is searching for a replacement to fill the defensive coordinator vacancy left by his father, Monte Kiffin, who left after the 2012 season to become the defensive coordinator for the Dallas Cowboys.

Aliotti will return in 2013 for his 22nd season with the Ducks. While Oregon is losing some valuable defensive pieces to graduation, including projected 1st-round NFL pick Dion Jordan at defensive end, Aliotti has an extremely talented core of younger players returning.

Aliotti's Coaching Career:

  • 1978-1979 Oregon (graduate assistant)
  • 1980-1983 Oregon State (running backs coach)
  • 1984-1987 Chico State (offensive coordinator, offensive line coach)
  • 1988-1992 Oregon (outside linebacker coach)
  • 1993-1994 Oregon (defensive coordinator, defensive backs coach)
  • 1994-1997 St. Louis Rams (special teams)
  • 1998 UCLA (defensive coordinator)
  • 1999-2013 Oregon (defensive coordinator)
