USC just escaped with a win over Utah State. The home games was supposed to be easier for USC than this, but on Saturday (Sept. 21) there were certainly thoughts that an upset might be brewing. The game was actually tied 14-14 heading into the fourth quarter, but the Trojans hit a field goal to take the lead and ended up holding on to it to move to 3-1 on the season.
Losing to an MWC school would have been a crushing blow to the Trojans this season, especially after losing their Pac-12 conference opener to the Washington State Cougars two weeks ago. With quite a few rumors swirling about the future of head coach Lane Kiffin, this week became a must-win game for the school. While it goes down as another win in the standings, this game was way too close for comfort.
After putting away Utah State 17-14, USC will next play the Arizona State Sun Devils on Sept. 28. That's a tough road game for the Trojans and the offense is going to have to come through much better than they did in Week 4 of the season. ASU made it into the top 25 after knocking off the Wisconsin Badgers 32-30 on Sept. 14, so it is clear that the Sun Devils are ready to play this season. The key for USC will be to come out of the gate strong and get an early lead.
