The University of Southern California fired baseball coach Frank Cruz on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, for violation NCAA rules regarding limits on practice time as well as organized team activities. During his tenure as baseball coach of the USC Trojans, Cruz was 48-63 according to Yahoo.
Pat Haden, athletic director for the Trojans, announced on Wednesday that Cruz was officially dismissed from the team. The school has self-imposed a reduction in the number of practice hours this season for the baseball team and next season as well.
"Adhering to all NCAA rules is paramount for each one of our coaches, student-athletes and staff members," Haden said. "Those who knowingly break NCAA rules are subject to termination."
Both the NCAA and Pac-12 have been advised by USC of the infraction and the actions imposed by the university.
Associated head coach Dan Hubbs has been promoted to head coach for this season. Hubbs is a former pitcher for the Trojans and is in his second season with USC as a coach.
"I'm confident that Dan Hubbs and his staff will lead our team to a successful season," Haden said. "Dan is a good coach, he is highly-regarded in the baseball community and he has strong Trojan roots."
