USA Today Coaches Poll Week 18: Gonzaga new No. 1, Kansas up to No. 3

The Week 18 USA Today Coaches Poll is out and Gonzaga is now No. 1. In the latest Week 18 poll from Monday (March 4), the Indiana Hoosiers slip to No. 2 and the Kansas Jayhawks are up to No. 3. The Gonzaga Bulldogs achieve a No. 1 ranking in this poll for the first time in school history.

New AP Top 25 Rewards Gonzaga

Gonzaga received 29 of the 31 first place votes this week, with Kansas and Louisville each receiving one. That might seem odd to some fans, because Louisville checks in No. 8 in the AP Top 25 and No. 6 in the latest coaches poll. Duke is now the No. 4 team and Georgetown is now No. 5, shaking up the votes a bit this week.

Rounding out the top are Miami, Michigan, Florida, and Kansas State. Further down the rankings, it is noteworthy that the 22-7 UCLA Bruins did not make it into the poll, but Saint Mary's is ranked No. 23. That might give the WCC a little more credit because Gonzaga has beaten then twice already this season.

Dropping out of the Week 18 USA Today Coaches Poll are Butler and Akron and the two new schools in the poll are Pittsburgh at No. 22 and Oregon at No. 25. Those are two schools that have regularly resided in the AP Top 25, showing that there is still a disconnect between what the writers are seeing and what the coaches are voting.

Heading into the 2013 WCC tournament, Gonzaga is now the No. 1 team in both major college basketball polls.
