As reported on Friday night, the USMNT lost 3-1 to a Costa Rican team that is always hard to beat in their turf.
When both teams entered the field, the USMNT was in first place by two points, and the Costa Ricans were the second place team.
After the victory, Costa Rica took first and is now up a point, 14 total. The USA has 13 points.
Costa Rica scored two goals in the first nine minutes of the game, which was a huge stunner for the USMNT.
The two goals scorers for the Costa Ricans in the first half were Johnny Acosta Zamora and Celso Borgas.
The USA responded by getting a penalty. Clint Dempsey took the penalty and barely made it, as the Costa Rican goalkeeper had a hand on it.
The Americans persisted the tie, but it was to no avail. Costa Rica got a jailbreak, counter attack and scored a third goal, via Joel Campbell. The goal was pretty much the nail in the coffin.
In reality, the USMT needed at least a tie in Costa Rica because Mexico is the next opponent on Tuesday. Further, Mexico lost at home against Honduras, 2-1, Friday night, so Mexico is hungry for a win. Additionally, it’s Mexico!
The last three games for the Americans could be tough with Mexico, Jamaica, and Panama. Panama is also hungry for a qualification to the World Cup.
As for Jamaica, they are only tough in Kingston. The USMNT plays Jamaica at home this time around; however, no one ever knows with the World Cup qualifiers!
