Thursday, the USA advanced to the FIFA World Cup Round of 16, even with its 1-0 loss to Germany in the final Group G game at Arena Pernambuco in Recife, Brazil for a crowd of 41,876. The top two teams in the Group of Death move on, which means that Germany and USA advance, and Portugal and No. 4 Ghana are eliminated.

It is the first time in history that the U.S. team has advanced out of the group phase in consecutive FIFA World Cup tournaments. The USA is now 8-18-6 all-time in the FIFA World Cup while Germany moves to 62-20-20 all-time.

The lone goal of the U.S. loss came in the 55th minute from German forward Thomas Müller. The match was played steady rain, which caused dangerous flooding in Recife.

Although the USA fell 1-0 to Germany, the squad previously defeated Ghana 2-1 and tied favorite Portugal 2-2, which thrusted the team to the next round on goal differential. The USA finished Group G with four goals scored and four allowed while Portugal scored four, but allowed seven. The USA now face Group H winner Belgium in the knockout round at Arena Fonte Nova in Salvador at 4 p.m. ET. Belgium is 11th in FIFA World Rankings and the USA is 13th.

Belgium defeated the Korea Republic 1-0 on Thursday, despite losing Steven Defour to a red card in the first half. Jan Vertonghen provided the lone goal in the 78th minute. The result gave Belgium the full nine points from three wins to take first in the group ahead of Algeria, who will meet Group G winner Germany in the Round of 16.

U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann's starting 4-5-1 lineup featured Tim Howard in goal and one change to the back line from the Ghana match as Omar Gonzalez paired at center back with Matt Besler along with left back DaMarcus Beasley and right back Fabian Johnson. The USA's formation included holding midfielders Jermaine Jones and Kyle Beckerman, with Graham Zusi on the left, Brad Davis on the right and Michael Bradley in the center. U.S. head coach Jurgen Klinsmann made two subs in the match, sending on Alejandro Bedoya for Brad Davis in the 59th minute and DeAndre Yedlin for Graham Zusi in the 84th minute.

Howard earned the 103rd appearance of his international career, breaking the goalkeeping record of 102 held by Kasey Keller. Howard ranks 11th on the all-time U.S. MNT appearances list.

Yellow card watch

All U.S. players are eligible for the Round of 16 match, but Jermaine Jones, Omar Gonzalez and Kyle Beckerman carry yellow cards into the next match. Another caution during any game through the quarterfinals for the trio would result in one-game suspension, but yellow cards clear heading into the semifinals.
