US tourist dies while scuba diving in Cayman Islands

Police in the Cayman Islands announced Friday that a United States tourist died while scuba diving off the island of Grand Cayman.

According to news reports, a 47-year-old female was diving at the popular North West Point area on February 3, when she lost consciousness during the ascent.

The unidentified woman had just completed the Little Tunnels dive and employees with Red Sails Sports diving company utilized CPR after bringing her to shore.

She was taken to Cayman Islands Hospital in George Town where she was pronounced dead.

According to CayCompass, the woman appeared to have difficulty during the ascent, and on surfacing, she lost consciousness.

Little Tunnels, also called Little Dipper, is a dive site off the west side of Grand Cayman, known for vibrant corals, sponges, and a wealth of eels, parrotfish, turtles, and more. A swim-through at the base of the mooring takes you from 50 feet of sand bottom to a 75 foot wall dive.  It exceeds maximum depth allowed under open water certification, so it is more than likely the unidentified woman was at least an advanced open water certified diver or higher.
