US to be found guilty of human rights violations? 1st UN review

Hillary Rodham Clinton, US Secretary of State

Will the US be found guilty of human rights violations? For the first time, the US will submit itself to a "universal periodic review" by the UN Human Rights Council. (EIN Presswire)

"Rolling out the State Department's latest human rights report, Secretary Hillary Rodham Clinton announced that, for the first time, the United States will submit itself to a process in which its record might be judged by some of the world's worst human rights abusers." (Washingtonpost.com)

Every UN member nation is supposed to be reviewed once every four years, but some observers are afraid the whole process will be politicized by human rights abusers, such as Iran and Myanmar, to justify their abuses.

"Human rights are universal, but their experience is local. This is why we are committed to holding everyone to the same standard, including ourselves," said US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Wow! This seems like such a huge step away from our status quo, so I'm kinda waiting for the catch. If this is really going to happen, maybe it will motivate the UN to take a hard look at the US for real? Maybe H. Clinton sees an opening to run against B. Obama in the next general election, because this seems like a departure from his agenda.
