US takes 1st and 2nd in WEG Individual Reining

Tom McCutcheon and Craig Schmersal rake in top scores in Reining.

American Reining champions Tom McCutcheon and Craig Schmersal beamed from the victory podium on September 30th at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG), picking up gold and silver medals in Individual Reining.

Gunners Special Nite, a six-year-old American Quarter Horse, and Tom McCutcheon posted a score of 228 to win the FEI Reining World Championship, presented by John Deere, in the indoor arena at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games (WEG).

“I knew he was pretty special tonight,” winner Tom McCutcheon said after his ride. “I felt pressure, for sure, because I wanted to do him justice. He’s a great little horse.”

Tom McCutcheon’s mount, Gunners Special Nite (Colonels Smoking Gun x Mifs Doll by Mifillena), was the 2007 National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) Futurity Champion. The horse has nearly $195,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings to date.

U.S. teammate Craig Schmersal and his 12-year-old American Quarter Horse, Mister Montana Nic, earned an impressive score of 223 in Individual Reining to capture the silver medal. Mister Montana Nic (Reminic x Mollie Montana by Montana Doc) was the 2005 FEI World Reining Master and has more than $130,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings to date.

The bronze medal was awarded to third place finisher, Canada’s Duane Latimer (riding Dun Playin Tag), who scored 222.5. Dun Playing Tag (Whiz N Tag Chex x Brennas Dunit Fancy by Hollywood Dun It), a six-year-old American Quarter Horse, has nearly $190,000 in NRHA lifetime earnings to date.

  • 5th – R. Kronsteiner and Einsteins Revolution – Austria – 221.00
  • 7th – B. Fonck and BA Reckless Chick – Belgium – 220.50
  • 8th – S. Sapergia and This Chics On Top – Canada – 218.50
  • 8th – S. Rzepka and Doctor Zip Nic – Germany – 218.50
  • 10th – D. Allen and Don Julio Whiz – Great Britain – 218.00
  • 10th – A. Poels and Whizdom Shines – Belgium – 218.00
  • 10th – M Muhlstatter and Wimpys Little Buddy – 218.00

With stiff competition, the Individual Reining ended with two-way tie for 5th place, a two-way tie for 8th place and a three-way tie for 10th place.

Americans reign in Reining at the 2010 World Equestrian Games.

Riding in their homeland, the U.S. Reining team also won the gold medal in Team Reining earlier this week.
