The 133rd edition of the US Open and the final fourth Grand Slam event of the year returns to the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City from August 26 - September 9th. The tournament are all played on hard courts, taking place over a series of 17 courts, including three main courts, Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium and Grandstand.
In the first day of action, 4 time champion Serena Williams defeated Francesca Schiavone in straight sets 6-0 and 6-1.
Venus Williams, the two-time US Open champion defeated 12th-seeded Kirsten Flipkens in straight sets, winning 6-1, 6-2.
No. 2 seed, Rafael Nadal who battled knee problems in last year's US Open defeated American Ryan Harrison 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 in a dominating win on Monday afternoon.
Serena Williams and Andy Murray are the 2012 defending champions in the singles events.
