Coming into the match, Sharapova was ranked No. 5 in the tournament. With her loss, that leaves only one woman left in the top six seeds. That woman is Serena Williams, who is seeded No. 1 and might be pretty pleased by how the top ranked opponents are slowly getting knocked out of contention. The heat has wreaked havoc on the games of many women and in this match they were even given a 10-minute break before the final set to rest up. Sharapova even returned to the court late, soaking up every minute of the break.

According to the other US Open 2014 results, Sara Errani will be the next opponent for Caroline Wozniacki. In the round-of-32, the No. 13 seeded Errani defeated Mirjana Lucic-Baroni in three sets. With Serena Williams on the other side of the bracket, either woman could have a great shot to make it all the way to the finals with a quarterfinal victory. Williams will play Kaia Kanepi of Estonia in her quarterfinal match.
