US Olympians warned about wearing Team USA uniforms outside of games

US athletes competing in this year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi have been advised by the State Department not to wear their uniforms outside of the games, according to Yahoo! today.

The State Department memo, which was reviewed by the Wall Street Journal, says, “"The U.S. Department of State has advised that wearing conspicuous Team USA clothing in non-accredited areas may put your personal safety at greater risk."

The creator of the uniforms, “Ralph Lauren,” which is synonymous with fashion and patriotism, couldn’t have been a better fit for Team USA Gear, or a bigger headache for security as it turns out. The uniforms are apparently bold, bright, and scream “USA”. With a distinct uniform such as this, traveling outside the secured area, also known as the "Ring of Steel,” could mean risky business for some US Olympians.

This comes on the heels from earlier this month, when the State Department issued a warning to Americans regarding traveling to Sochi and how it may pose a target for terrorists. As these incidents keep adding up, so do the cancelations and forgoing of trips to Sochi by the athletes’ families and would-be patrons.
