Urgent: Save The Hollywood Farmers' Market

The always crowded Hollywood Farmers' Market
The always crowded Hollywood Farmers' Market
Judi Gerber

As I wrote about a few days ago, the Hollywood Farmers' Market is facing the prospect of having to scale back dramatically and/or relocate some of it's over 120 vendors, due to a conflict with the LA Film School over parking. The LA Film School petitioned the city to "move" the market away from their parking lot, which is located on Ivar Avenue between Sunset Blvd and Selma Ave. Despite meetings between the two parties and City officials, the issue is far from settled.

As the group says on it's website, "Setting up a farmers' market is not simply an issue of moving a few tents and tables, but is logistically complex, with many public safety issues involved. Current proposals for shifting the market provide inadequate space for the displaced farmers and vendors, raise issues of public safety or both. Due to these considerations, we fear that moving the Hollywood Farmers' Market is not a viable solution.

If the City follows through, most of the Sunday market vendors on Ivar Avenue between Selma Ave. and Sunset Blvd. – about 1/2 of the farmers – could be denied space to operate, or may be shifted to a new, not-yet-determined location less convenient or less safe than their current placement.

This action also jeopardizes the viability of SEE-LA, itself, and the 7 other farmers' markets, major nutrition education program and Farmer-to-School program it operates throughout the City of Los Angeles."

On 12/9/10 SEE-LA has issued an action alert encouraging people to write Los Angeles City Council member Garcetti and the Public Works Department and Bureau of Street Services:
