Urban Meyer will take leave of absence for health reasons

Urban Meyer will take a leave of absence for health reasons. Urban Meyer will not be stepping down as the Florida Gators head coach, he said in a press conference from New Orleans on Sunday afternoon.

Urban Meyer’s two minute speech said that he had given it a great deal of thought, and after speaking with the Florida athletic director, Jeremy Foley, he decided it would be better then stepping down.  Yesterday, Meyer announce that he would be stepping down as Head Coach of the Florida Gators, much to the shock of college football fans.  To read his full statement, click here.

Meyer, 45, said that he will be the head coach for the Sugar Bowl, and that this is his first Sugar Bowl so he is looking forward to it.  Meyer said that if he could say that any one thing changed his mind about stepping down, it would be the players and staff.

Meyer said that his chest pains started about four years ago, and he believes that they are stress related. He wants to make sure that he has his priorities straight. After his recent trip to the hospital, he knew he needed to take care of this.  He said that he has had health related problems all year, and that he will need to figure out how to deal with the stress.

Meyer was the Utah Utes coach a couple of years ago, before he left to coach the Florida Gators. He is considered to be one of the best college football coaches right now.  Meyer said that over the next few days, they will figure out how all of this will play out.  Meyer said that in his gut, he believes he will be back and coach the Gators again by fall.
