Hartford Food System will be the beneficiary of a wonderful evening of local food, music, beer, wine and art on Saturday, October 5th. Whole Foods, the nation’s leading natural organic retailer, chose Hartford Food System as the beneficiary of this event, which occurs at one of HFS' five urban farm sites at 75 Laurel Street in Hartford.
Dinner begins at 6:00pm with a reception featuring passed hors d'oevres. The first seated course is a salad of fall greens, followed by your choice of meat of vegetarian main dishes and several seasonal side vegetable dishes. Dessert is an autumn fruit crisp with whipped cream.
Since 1978, Hartford Food System has been a leader in grassroots efforts to fight hunger and improve nutrition in Hartford’s low-income neighborhoods. They are one of the nation’s oldest organizations working to promote the concept of community food security, defined as all persons being able to obtain a culturally acceptable, nutritionally adequate diet in their community from normal sources such as grocery stores and farmers markets.
Hartford Food System's work and programs are based on three reinforcing strategies:
- Increase access for all residents to normal food outlets, particularly grocery stores and farmers markets.
- Deepen the connection between food consumers, especially our youth, and agricultural production.
- Advance public policies to improve affordability and quality of food.
