According to an August 30th press release, national statistics indicate that complementary and alternative medicine practices continue to rise in popularity both inside and outside the United States. As more and more people turn to CAM practices for health care, many consumers and health care practitioner a like are beginning to recognize the need for implementing safe guards.
This could be good news for residents in Central Florida. For decades state law-makers have maintained certain restrictions on those who would practice natural health in Florida. In order to practice manual therapies of any kind, including massage, acupuncture and chiropractic, you must be licensed in state of Florida.
Up until the mid-twentieth century a Naturopathic physician required state licensure to practice in Florida. However, the state has not issued a license since 1959.
Many complementary services are still available in major metropolitan areas. In the Orlando metro area alone, there are at least 18 acupuncturists listed, over 260 chiropractors and around 6 wellness centers offering natural therapies such as massage, hypnosis and herbal remedies.
Could this upward trend affect the way Floridians view natural medicine? Could we be seeing a new trend in the Sunshine state? To find out more about current legislation regarding natural health practices in the U.S. and Florida, contact the State of Florida Department of Health:
