Kayakers are human just like the rest of society. Sometimes we just want mindless entertainment for 15 minutes and if it's kayaking related even better. The catch with this free, flash video game, called UpStream Kayak is that you still have to think a little. Stay upside down too long, you virtually die. Get smashed on the rocks too often, you virtually die, I think everyone gets the picture. Nonetheless the game is a hoot for a minutes of fun.
Basic keyboard controls such as the arrow buttons control paddling and the front of the kayak. Using the numerical keys 1, 2 , 3 , 4 enable various tricks along with the space bar for jumping. Various items exist along the way for you to jump after for points; just like in every stupid video game.
Kids might enjoy it, it's free, and it makes a good catalyst for conversation about real kayaking. Items such as control, balance, stability, and risk all play a role in actual natural surroundings. Nothing will take the place of being outside but it's jolly good fun anyways for a few minutes.
The water has warmed up nicely due to a hot summer, take advantage of it and go paddle your kayak !

I've been enjoying recently the Kayak Extreme game from Small Rockets. I have it running on Windows 7, and at its highest resolution and detail levels it's a hoot, and provides a great way to deal with kayaing withdrawal when you can't make it to real water. Best of all, it's free - on their website, they're providing the full-game license key for free because they don't want to have to provide support for all the latest Windows platforms, so if it works for you and your version of WIndows, great, if not, no big loss. Give it a try!
