Upper Darby cops make arrest in rape and human trafficking

Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood announced yesterday that a Drexel Hill man has been charged with rape and human trafficking. Kevin G. Cornish, 42, of the unit block of Ferne Boulevard, in the Drexelbrook section, with raping an 18-year old Philadelphia woman who had responded to an employment ad posted online on Craigslist. The woman responded to an ad placed by Cornish for employment as a home health aide.

According to Chitwood,” “I’ve said it over and over again, cautioning people about Craigslist,” he continued, “There are a lot of sickos out there. You really have to be careful.” The woman, from Philadelphia had responded to the ad on Craigslist and the accused phoned her back to offer her an application for employment. The woman, who doesn’t drive was picked up by the accused and driven to his apartment. After filling out the job application the suspect drove the victim home. The suspect then called the victim back and told her he had a job for her. She returns to the Cornish’s residence where he holds the woman against her will and rapes her.

According to Chitwood, the victim was then held against her will while Cornish, reportedly also forced the victim to pose nude for photos and complete a job application to work for an escort for an escort service. Chitwood continued, “He told her she was not going anywhere until she signed the forms.” After some time the victim was able to escape her captive.

According to the police superintendent, a warrant was issued for the suspect’s residence where 3 computers were found along with 50 or so applications for the so called escort service. The Upper Darby police are actively trying to identify the woman listed on the applications. Chitwood continued, ““Apparently he has been doing this for some time, so we may have a major human trafficking operation,” and further stated “We have to check all of these applications to see if (those women) were assaulted.”

Cornish was arraigned on charges of rape by forcible compulsion, rape by threat of forcible compulsion, indecent assault, sexual assault, involuntary sexual assault, human trafficking, kidnapping, prostitution, false imprisonment and unlawful restraint.

Cornish has been placed in jail in lieu of posting $250,000 cash bail and is scheduled for a preliminary hearing June 10 before Magisterial District Judge Robert Radano.
