iOS 7.0 for the iPhone is now available, and everyone is buzzing about its new features and design. So, if you’ve put off updating your iOS, you might want to take the time to update.
In addition to all of the “cool” features iOS 7.0 offers, keeping your iPhone updated with the most recent operating software can help prevent glitches in apps you are running, and also help prevent your iPhone from crashing.
Here are the mechanics for updating your phone –
To check which iOS you are currently running on your iPhone, tap: Settings > General > About (then scan down to “version” on this screen). If you are still running anything in the 6s, it’s time to update.
Begin by opening Settings, and then Software Update. A screen will appear explaining some of the features and improvements iOS 7.0 offers:
- iTunes Radio
- Camera and Photos
- the Notification Center
You can access additional information about iOS 7.0 by tapping “Learn More.”
Next, tap the Download and Install window, which will display Apple’s terms and conditions. Hit the “Agree” button at the bottom right of the screen and then again in the next pop-up window. If your phone’s battery is low, or you need to conserve your battery, use a phone charger; this is, at least, a thirty-minute update. Then tap, “Continue.”
The gears will begin to spin on your Settings icon in the upper left corner of the screen. Downloading and then Install windows will appear as the process continues.
First, you will notice a blue bar, which tells you how long it will take (and is taking) to download the software. Then the screen will turn white and an install bar will pop up on your screen – twice.
When your phone begins to say, “Hello” in multiple languages, “slide” to set up your options by following the screen prompts.
You’re done, and when you look at your iPhone desktop, it will be very different; your icons and their functions will have taken on a whole new appearance, and you’ll probably have to search around for your Calendar, Weather, Notes, Game Center, Settings, etc. This iOS offers a whole new phone design and iPhone experience.
As I continue to explore iOS 7, I’ll take note of any major differences, and pass them along. One major change you might want to take note of is how to access your Search Engine (Spotlight). Swipe down, in the middle of the screen. The search line will be at the top. To return to the main screen, tap Cancel in the upper right corner, or just tap the screen. (This function used to be a side-swipe on the main screen of your phone.)
That’s it for now; more to come regarding these major, new changes.
iPhones can be purchased at the Apple Store, Westfarms Mall, Farmington, CT, and your local Best Buy (Simsbury and Newington).
