Updates: Buying Organic meat can stop worry about staph infected meats

According to information released on Friday, nearly half the meat a whopping 47percent of the meat being sold right now is infected with staphylococus and that bacteria is resistant to antibiotics.  The fact that so much meat is contaminated has to do with how the animals are raised themselves.

Antibiotic resistance is a problem in the U.S. and a study reveles that the over use of antibiotics in cattle is a leading cause.  Their overuse is based on the over crowding and unsanitary conditions that cattle are kept in, keeping infection from spreading from one cow to the other.  This means antibiotics used to treat humans may become more ineffective.

Big business farming accounts for 70 percent of the antibiotic use across the United States.  In 2009 the FDA estimated 290 million pounds were sold for livestock use.

The U.S. government tests regularly for four types of bacteria and staphylococus is not one of them.  Staph causes hundreds of thousands of infections every year.  Staph infections kill more people than AIDS do.  There are 30 different types of staph that are know for causing:

  • pneumonia
  • toxic shock syndrome
  • food poisoning
  • blood poisoning

This bacteria is always there in your meat, there is no way to permanently do away with it.  Cooking does killmost of the bacteria, but the way to keep disease from spreading is by how you handle the meat when it is raw.
