This time of year it is difficult to nail down a top ten ranking of prospects at any position. We still have several College Bowl games to be played, we still have the post season all star games to be played, and we are more than a month away from the start of the NFL Scouting combine.
However since we are past the College regular season, and the Heisman Trophy as been presented, we have a pretty good idea of how this will shake out. So, pending some under classman declaring for the draft, or choosing to return to school, here is a look at the top ten RB prospects for the 2010 NFL Draft:
1. CJ Spiller, Senior, Clemson- Beyond being one of the best RB prospects, Spiller is also an elite return man. He may be small, but he is faster than Barry Sander was, and when he gets behind the defense, he will not be caught
2. Jonathan Dwyer, Junior, Georgia Tech- He would be the perfect NFL Power back in a two back offense. Since he lined up at FB in College a lot, he may be returning to school after a so so year he may return to Tech and their goofy offensive scheme
3. Toby Gerhart, Senior, Stanford- He is a between the tackles kind of runner, and since the NFL is more and more becoming a two back haven, he would be an ideal power guy to a speedster or someone who runs around the O line instead of through it
4. Jahvid Best, Junior, California- His best skill is in cutting back in traffic, and has excellent inside quickness. Once through the D line he has a second and even a third gear to get to the next stages of the Defense
5. Charles Scott, Senior, LSU- He is the elite power back. At 5-11 and 230 lbs he is very tough to get down, when he gets going. Lost 15 lbs before the season and now is more effective and running to the outside as well
6. Anthony Dixon, Senior, Mississippi State- Yet another big back in a year full of them. Dixon is a strong and physical runner, who can push and drag defenders for extra yardage
7. Ryan Matthews, Junior, Fresno State- Had a great 209, 1,316 yards, 7.4 yards per carry, and 11 TD’s in eight games. Some of that is due to his playing the WAC, but against Cincinnati, Wisconsin, and Boise State had 486 yards, 4 TD’s on 76 carries
8. Montario Hardesty, Senior, Tennessee- The highlight of the Tennessee offense this past year. Racked up 1,306 yards and a 4.9 yards per carry. To go along with his 12 TD’s
9. Ben Tate, Senior, Auburn- for four seasons now Tate has been an important part of the Auburn defense. He is a downhill runner, whose status among SEC RB’s is up for debate, but his tools and skills are not
10. James Starks, Senior, Buffalo- He is solidly built back who shows the toughness, competitiveness, and passion to consistently gain important yards. He also has the vision and the quickness to find holes in the defense
