According to a breaking news story in Denton County, Texas, country star Randy Travis has been arrested and released after being charged with public intoxication.
Per a Feb. 6, 2012, story from the Denton Record-Chronicle newspaper, which was filed online at 11:33 a.m. (CST), the 52-year-old Travis was delivered to the Denton County Jail by a police officer from nearby Sanger, Texas, at about 1:30 a.m. today, Monday, Feb. 6, and then released on a Class C misdemeanor citation.
According to DR-C staff writer Donna Fielder's report,Tom Reedy, a spokesman for the Denton County Sherriff's Office, Travis was taken into custody after an officer saw a "suspicious vehicle" at a church on Fifth Street in Sanger. Travis reportedly was inside the vehicle and smelled of alcohol, in addition to having an open bottle of wine.
“The law states that you must bring a person arrested on public intoxication to jail and hold him for at least four hours,” Reedy said in the DR-C report, regarding the arrest of the country hit-maker, who was released after being issued the aforementioned citation.
Examiner.com left a message for Travis's Nashville-based public relations representative seeking comment from the singer about the incident. In response, the following statement from Travis was received via email.
"I apologize for what resulted following an evening of celebrating the Super Bowl. I'm committed to being responsible and accountable, and apologize for my actions," he said.
Travis,who finalized his divorce from wife Lib Hatcher in fall 2010, listed his address as Blanks Road in Tioga, Texas, according to jail records.
