"California Breathing is an organization dedicated to improving the lives of people with asthma in California by leading the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Asthma in California (the Plan).

California Breathing is housed in the California Department of Public HealthÂ’'s Environmental Health Investigations Branch.

Consistent with the priorities of the branch, California Breathing focuses on disease surveillance, increasing capacity of a broad network of partners to achieve goals in the Plan, and developing interventions that improve environmental conditions that cause or exacerbate asthma in the most vulnerable populations."

In July and August 2014, California Breathing updated much of its California County Asthma Profiles. This resource summarizes lots of asthma information for all California counties.

I live in what is often referred to as The Greater Sacramento Region. This is typically characterized as the Northern California Counties of: El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento, Sutter, Yolo, and Yuba.

It is interesting to review updated asthma prevalence information for The Greater Sacramento Region in the California County Asthma Profiles.

For this survey, the study years are 2011-2012. Key definitions include:

  • "Asthma Prevalence" refers to "Lifetime asthma prevalence is the proportion of people in the population who have ever been diagnosed with asthma by a health provider."

During this time period, Asthma Prevalence for California was 14.1% of the population, all ages.

  • "Active Asthma" refers to "Active asthma prevalence is the proportion of people in the population who have ever been diagnosed with asthma by a health provider and report that they still have asthma and/or report that they had an episode or attack within the past 12 months."

During this time period, Active Asthma for California was 8.3% of the population, all ages.

For the following counties, Asthma Prevalence and Active Asthma are reported for all ages.

El Dorado County has a total population of 182,360 people. Asthma Prevalence is 17.1%. Active Asthma is 12.1%.

Placer County has a total population of 367,196 people. Asthma Prevalence is 15.5%. Active Asthma is 7.2%.

Sacramento County has a total population of 1,463,605 people. Asthma Prevalence is 14.9%. Active Asthma is 7.8%.

Sutter County has a total population of 97,800 people. Asthma Prevalence is 16.0%. Active Asthma is 10.3%.

Yolo County has a total population of 207,312 people. Asthma Prevalence is 16.0%. Active Asthma is 7.3%.

Yuba County has a total population of 74,624 people. Asthma Prevalence is 12.7%. Active Asthma is 8.2%.

This updated data confirms that The Greater Sacramento Region is impacted by Asthma Prevalence and Active Asthma that for many of the counties is worse than the State of California average.
