Update: Stepdad waives court appearance in Alpharetta High student's murder

A Milton man waived his first court appearance Monday on charges in the deadly shooting of his 16-year-old stepson.

On Monday, police said they still don’t know what prompted the shooting, which escalated from an argument between the man and the teen.

Milton police have charged Mr. Eric Brandon, 46, with felony murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, according to Fulton County jail officials.

The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s office has identified the teen as Alexander Koser who, according to media reports, was an Alpharetta High School student.

Investigators said Mr. Brandon called police about 2:15 a.m. to report the shooting at 3153 Genesis Way.

The dispatcher said the caller, Mr. Brandon, advised that he had shot his son and killed him, according to a Milton police report.

As officers approached the home, Mr. Brandon exited the townhouse through the front door.

When asked about the gun, Mr. Brandon told police the gun was in the house and there was another weapon upstairs, the report said.

"While standing next to Mr. Brandon I detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emitting from his person," one officer said in the report.

When officers entered the home, they found the teen dead inside.

The teen and his stepfather had gotten into an argument when Mr. Brandon allegedly got the 12-gausge shotgun and shot the teen three times, Capt. McCarty said.

A neighborhood child was in the home at the time of the shooting, but was not harmed, Capt. McCarty said.

Mr. Brandon will remain in jail until his preliminary hearing on Feb. 27, jail spokeswoman Ms. Tracy Flanagan said.
