Pagosa Springs, CO - Just before Christmas, a dog sat alone in his kennel run at the Downey Shelter in California. The dog, only identified by a number, had been in his lonely run since November - as the weeks rolled by, he become more and more dejected.
Somehow he had avoided death while at the kill shelter, but he was far from safe, even further from happiness. His emotional shut down was apparent in his body language.
But this dog was not destined to die in the Downey Shelter. Thanks to Pagosa Animal Advocates in Colorado, the dog now known as Nick, has a bright future.
On December 22, a rescue angel named Chandra Miller took Nick away from his prison. Chandra fostered the forgotten dog for 6 days - during that time he visited a veterinarian and received medications for untreated Giardia and care for his tail, which has been removed for some reason whlle he was at the shelter.
On December 28, just 2 days before he was scheduled to be euthanized, Nick was taken to Hawthorne, CA where he was able to catch a flight on Pet Airways - his final destination, Pagosa Springs, CO.
Nick is now being cared for by Angi Knickerbocker - a woman that is happy to share frequent updates on her special foster dog. So far, Nick has proven himself to be exceptionally sweet.
He bonded strongly and quickly to his new care provider and Knickerbocker reports that Nick savors the touch of a kind hand.
Nick is currently fearful of other dogs - there is no way to know what Nick has experienced in his past, but his foster mom believes that his fear is stemming from prior abuse or neglect. Nick has scars on his face...scars that may help to explain his current apprehension.
But there is good news for Nick - his current foster is committed to finding him a devoted and loving family of his own, she is also committed to helping him conquer his fear of other dogs.
He no longer has to worry about pain, neglect or being abandoned. Nick has a future now - a future that is filled with love. Many thanks to the good people of Pagosa Animal Advocates for stepping up to offer Nick his very own Christmas Miracle.
Many expenses were taken on by Pagosa Animal Advocates as they facilitated Nick's rescue. Nick's transport and veterinary care exceeded $1000. Anyone hoping to contribute towards Nick's expenses can do so by making a tax-deductible donation at this Chip-In link.
A huge thank you to Pagosa Animal Advocates - you literally saved Nick's life and gave him a future. Keep up the amazing work.

Penny, I am so grateful for these heartwarming updates. They are too few and far between. Even if the ending is the worst possible outcome imaginable, I wonder if others feel as I do, that it is better to know, rather than have the uneasy loose ends that haunt us. Any other stories from your past year of excellent reporting have wrap-ups?
Regina, just so you are aware, there are a huge number of us networking Nick and animals like Nick every single day on Facebook. It took a tremendous effort, by a lot of animal lovers, to save him from death row. He is only one of an amazing amount of dogs and cats and other animals that are now saved by this huge community on FB. I am very proud to be apart of it. God bless the animals...working towards a NO KILL NATION!!!
Anyone interested in joining this effort may friend me on Facebook, Karen Ann Tailwag. God bless the animals, may 2011 be an even better year for them. Better laws against animal abuse, getting shelters to get educated about going NO Kill, shutting down animal gas chambers, making people aware of the importance of spay and neutering their animals, adopting and not shopping for a pet...all things we address and try to change for the betterment of animals...won't you join us? Happy New Year friends
I'm so happy for you baby. I hope and I will pray that you find your special, loving family because you deserve one, along with all the many other lonely, neglected animals out there. God Bless everyone who stepped up to help change Nick's future!!

That is wonderful news. His hunched, dejected pose in the corner of his cage was such a sad sight. It is lovely to see the difference in his demeanor now.

I live in the amazing and loving town of Pagosa Springs and I know the wonderful folks that are on the Animal Advocate group and they are truely wonderful folks. I have no doubt that Nick will be in heaven here with some loving new owners. God bless you all for your loving efforts.
What a wonderful story. I adopted my dog Strider from a shelter than euthanizes dogs after 60 days. Strider was 20 days from being put down, and kept in a tiny cement cell. He is a big dog and very aggressive with strangers and other dogs. I have no way of knowing what happened to him in his past to make him like this, but every day he gets a little better and we're working hard to manage his aggression. Dogs are amazingly adaptable animals. No one should ever give up on them.
