Former staff member at Jackson’s Belhaven University (and current Mission to the World missionary) Brent Kooi is spending the semester back in the states trying to raise awareness about the spread of the gospel in Japan.
Specifically, Kooi will be sharing about Genesis International College at numerous Mississippi churches. GIC of Osaka, Japan, where Kooi will serve as the Vice President for Student Life, is, according to its web site, “an English language Christian two year college scheduled to launch in 2015. Academic programs include a one year full-time English Academic Training Program (EATP), modular part-time Executive English Programs (EXP) aimed at businessmen, and a two year Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree.”
The FAQ section of the college’s site explains why there is a need for such a school is Osaka: “Japan is the 2nd largest unreached people group on earth. A nation where less than 0.22% of the population attends a Protestant church service of any kind… The church in Japan, in particular, is lacking in young people. Genesis College seeks to be a catalyst for training and deepening the roots of the gospel into the next generation of Japan.”
The college’s doctrinal statement is the Lausanne Theological Covenant. While in the U.S., Kooi will be staying at the missionary house operated by First Baptist Church of Clinton. If possible, Kooi intends to stay in Clinton until June 30. Clinton is a suburb of Jackson so I will be in close proximity to my church and many other churches where I will be sharing about Genesis International College in the upcoming months,” Kooi’s most recent newsletter explains. “I will gain occupancy around February 15 and can stay until June 30.
