Denman is a 13-year-old gelding. He was officially retired in 2011. He was living it up as a retired horse at Charlotte Alexander’s yard, Cheltenham, when he was struck with the serious infection.
His owner Paul Barber said,
He got an infection in the bone and once we'd cured the bone problem, he then had a problem with his blood. It was a very worrying affair. The veterinary hospital at Newmarket told me it was going to be touch and go.
Barber has had Denman in a veterinary hospital for the last five months and, finally, the horse was permitted to go to his home barn. According to Barber, he is improving each day.
His owner sees Denman frequently and is pleased that his horse is beginning to make some headway. Barber says, “He has a horrible piece of swelling around his fetlock joint which is going down every week … I can only pray and hope that he will make a full recovery.”
Denman has been trained by Paul Nicholls. Denman beat out his own stablemate Kauto Star in 2008, when he won the 2008 Gold Cup. He then followed up his win with several successive years coming in as runner up in second place.
Denman is now back in the field with other horses and walking out well.
Full of hope and confidence, Barber said, “I'm sure he's going to be back to loving life again."
