A 74-year-old man who was beaten and robbed in a McDonald’s restroom died Tuesday, three weeks after the attack.

And police on Wednesday announced that they have arrested the man accused of assaulting him.

Mr. Frederic Cooper was attacked and his back fractured in the restroom of a McDonald’s in Norcross on Feb. 24, according to Gwinnett County police.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. at the fast food restaurant at 1650 Indian Trail, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith has said in a news release.

The suspect, Mr. Donald Thomas, allegedly followed the suspect into the bathroom and attempted to take the victim’s wallet out of his pocket, police spokesman Cpl. Jake Smith said.

“When the victim resisted, the suspect physically attacked him, knocking him to the floor,” Cpl. Smith said. “The victim was injured during the attack; his injuries included a laceration on his face and a fractured back.”

Detectives received multiple tips regarding the identity of the suspect and those tips led detectives to identify Mr. Thomas as the alleged assailant seen in a video from the restaurant.

The 50-year-old was arrested on Monday and charged with robbery and aggravated battery against a person 65 years or older.

He remained in custody at the Gwinnett County Detention Center Wednesday without bond. And police are now investigating whether to charge him with murder.

An autopsy will be done on Mr. Cooper in the near future, Cpl. Smith said.
